My name is Karen Rauen, Ph.D. I am an accomplished analytical chemist and an experienced director of testing laboratories, specializing in analytical testing, beauty, food, fitness, health, personal care, product safety and sensory testing. As the Director of the Health and Consumer Science operation at Consumer Reports, I manage several testing laboratories looking at products ranging from food to lotions to treadmills to blood glucose meters, the results of which are published in Consumer Reports (CR) magazine, Consumer Reports.org, ShopSmart magazine, CR Health Newsletter and TV reports, including syndicated CRTV reports. Product safety projects include tests of food and children's products for the detection of contaminants, including reports on lead in children's jewelry, arsenic in apple juice, arsenic in rice products and bacteria and antibiotic resistance of detected bacteria in poultry and meat products.
