My father was a political prisoner during WWII in the Netherlands, but Holland had become too small for him after the war. He and my two brothers left for the U.S in 1957. My husband and I accompanied by our 3 children, came to the U.S. at the tail end of 1959 and promptly got a fourth child. Now I have 3 Dutch and one American. I went on to become a medical assistant, a profession I enjoyed immensely, taking care of others suits me. After I retired, during the building of a college in the town I live , someone discovered I had a talent for photography. When the administrator voiced a complaint that he had no money in his budget to decorate the stark white walls, I offered to loan him some of my enlargements, (they were just hanging in my bedroom anyway.) The rest is history...I was discovered. I now have a second career as a photographer and I exhibit, show, and sell my work. I also have a website: www.photographybyhans.com It keeps me young(er) and on the go. I have just completed a book about my memories of WWII and the hoops my father had to jump through to keep us alive, and am trying to find an agent and than a publisher, hopefully in this life time!
