About Denise

Dr. Denise Hanson, Licensed Psychologist, has been providing psychological services since 1977. Dr. Hanson completed her bachelor of arts degree in psychology in 1975 at Merrimack College, North Andover, MA; her master of science degree in clinical psychology in 1977 at Fort Hays University, Hays, KS; her certificate of advanced graduate study in counseling psychology with an emphasis in family therapy, in 1984 at Assumption College, Worcester, MA; and her doctoral degree in clinical psychology in 1996 at Antioch New England Graduate School, Keene, NH. She completed her pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, where she trained in child and adolescent services, neuropsychology and learning evaluations of children. Dr. Hanson is currently licensed in both Massachusetts and North Carolina and is a member of The National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, The American Psychological Association, The North Carolina Psychological Association and The Cape Fear Psychological Association. She is also on staff at the new Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Dr. Hanson worked in private practice in the Boston area until 1999 when she and her husband, Dr. Russell Gerry, General Internist, moved to Wilmington, NC. In February 2000, Dr. Hanson and her husband founded the Center for Integrated Health Care, PC, a group practice based on an integrated model of health care, which postulates that physical health and emotional health cannot be separated. As such, they need to be treated as an integrated entity. Since March of 2000, CIHC has grown tremendously as a result of the positive response from the people served. Dr. Hanson currently has five other mental health clinicians who work with her in the practice. She specializes in working with children, adolescents, families, behavioral disorders, and attention deficits. She provides psychological and neuropsychological testing with both children and adults. Recently, she has been working with patients with neurological disorders, such as traumatic brain injury and stroke. She also provides consultations and seminars to schools, hospitals, and other social service agencies. Dr. Hanson is currently working on a book on anger, stress, and forgiveness.
