NAPW Open Doorways Program
1/19/2010
Garden City, NY (January 19, 2010) – The National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) today announced the establishment of a first-of-its-kind partnership mentoring program with the Urban League of Essex County in Newark, New Jersey.
The “NAPW/Urban League of Essex County Open Doorways Program” is designed to bring professional women who are members of NAPW -- the fastest growing professional women’s association in the country -- in direct and regular contact over an entire school semester with Newark-based, inner-city middle-school girls who currently participate in a much heralded after-school program conducted by the Urban League of Essex County.
“I am truly excited about the prospect of NAPW-mentors providing our students with unique and rewarding life-experience lessons and role-modeling,” says Vivian Fraser, Executive Director of the Urban League of Essex County. “I expect that our girls’ scholastic and social endeavors will be immensely enhanced by the attention, insights, advice and counseling they receive from NAPW’s professional women. This is the type of exposure our girls would not have, if not for the passion, commitment and generosity of NAPW’s members.”
According to Cindy Burns, NAPW’s Director of Local Chapters, mentoring other NAPW members has long been a cornerstone of the NAPW experience. The act of mentoring -- offering time and energy to help others, who might gain from their particular skills, accumulated knowledge and on-point experience - - is a way of “paying forward” and contributing to the growth and prosperity of fellow professional women. “We look forward to the ‘NAPW/Urban League of Essex County Open Doorways Mentoring Program’ adding a critical service component to the already rewarding member-to-member mentoring experience,” Ms. Burns says.
Program Details
The “NAPW/Urban League of Essex County Open Doorways Mentoring Program” is scheduled to kick-off at the Newark-based Louise A. Spencer School, an Urban League community partner, on February 18th at 3:30 PM.
At this first meeting, ten NAPW volunteer-mentors will be paired with ten girls, ages 12 to 14 years old, and each mentor-mentee group will spend their first hour together learning about one another and setting manageable goals for the semester-long program. In addition to meeting with their mentees on a once-a-month basis, mentors will be available to the students through email communications and by phone. “Our association is deeply enthusiastic about the benefits that can be derived from the “NAPW/Urban League of Essex County Open Doorways Mentoring Program”, says Matthew Proman, President of the National Association of Professional Women. “Our members have always been extremely charitable and generous with their time. ‘Open Doorways’ provides a new and unique opportunity for our members to expand their collective social ‘footprint’ and to make lasting impressions on a generation of future professional women. I’m honored to be a part of this ambitious and worthwhile initiative.”
