Q&A with Julie Kampf, President of JBK Associates, Inc

[NAPW]  What is your profession?

[Kampf]  President and Founder of a Talent Management Organization that includes Executive Search, Leadership Development and Executive Coaching.

[NAPW] Tell us a little bit about your career journey:

[Kampf]   After 17 years in the fashion industry, I found myself needing to make a change as a single parent and someone who had traveled extensively around the world. I made the transition almost ten years ago to the H.R. Field/Executive Search business, worked for three companies and then decided to make a go of it on my own.

[NAPW]  When did you know this is what you wanted to do? Did you have an ‘ah ha’ moment?

[Kampf]   I knew when I started in the search business almost from the first day that I loved it and to this day I wish I had thought about this as a career much sooner in the process. I added the other components as the company has grown to include the other H.R. augments.

[NAPW] What are some of your greatest accomplishments and/or accolades?

[Kampf]  My most important accomplishment in life is my 15 year-old son who has grown into a wonderful young adult. From a professional perspective, growing my company in less than six years to eight people and being named one of Working Mother’s Top 25 Women Owned Companies in the U.S. in 2008. Our clients include start-ups, mid-size and multinational organizations that we love to work with. We help them build teams that grow their business and who bring great products and services to consumers. We have been recognized by the American Business Awards as Best New Company, by Forbes and by Diversity Business as a Top 100 New Jersey Company for our dedication to bringing diverse talent to our clients.

[NAPW]  Do you have a mantra?

[Kampf]  Goose Fraba...that’s what my son tells me to say when I start to get stressed...you know what, it works!

[NAPW]  What inspires you on a day-to- day basis?

[Kampf]  My son, my fiancé, my father, the people that I work with and the constant drive to do good work.

[NAPW]  What is on your ipod?

[Kampf]  Jazz, disco, hip-hop and Thomas Friedman’s book “The World is Flat.”

[NAPW]  Tell us a funny story about you.

[Kampf]  I wouldn’t say that there is anything funny about me unless you count the fact that I have as many pairs of shoes as Imelda Marcos and am known as such, but what I would say is that I would like to be known as a mentor, a compassionate leader who really cares about the people who work with her, and a person who believes in giving back to the community in gratitude for what I have been fortunate to achieve. More important, I want my son to see that women can be equal contributors to the world and have respect for their contributions and leadership. I know that he has experienced successes and failures along the way with me, but in the end, hopefully the good times have outweighed the tough ones. It has truly been a joy to build my company and I look forward to going to work every single day!
