[NAPW] What is your profession?
[Wilkus] I’m a registered landscape architect, LEED accredited professional. I started my firm to focus on construction management of urban public open space.
[NAPW] Tell us a little bit about your career journey:
[Wilkus] As a young design professional, I knew my calling was in management. I loved construction, but in the 1980s you didn’t see women on the construction site and most certainly not in a management position. I continued to work at design firms as the “go to” person for technical advice. Finally in 2002, I was able to work for a landscape architect who shared my passion for construction. In 2005, I went out on my own and I have grown ever since. I am now recognized as the only landscape architecture firm that specializes in quality assurance/ quality control of construction and construction management.
[NAPW] When did you know this is what you wanted to do? Did you have an ‘ah ha’ moment?
[Wilkus] I struggled for years and almost left the profession of landscape architecture because I was not “the designer” type. After seeking professional career counseling, I realized I really belonged in construction management. That was in the tenth year of my career development. It wasn’t until after twenty-two years that I was able to fulfill my dream and follow my calling.
[NAPW] What are some of your greatest accomplishments and/or accolades?
[Wilkus] Having internationally known landscape architects recognize the importance of having another landscape architect on the construction side of things to ensure their design vision is what I call accomplished.
[NAPW] Do you have a mantra?
[Wilkus] To try to be at least half the woman my mother was.
[NAPW] What inspires you on a day-to-day basis?
[Wilkus] Being on a construction site and working with people to solve construction problems. I’m also inspired by the ability to learn something new everyday.
[NAPW] What is on your iPod?
[Wilkus] Andres Bocelli, Chris Botti, Lady Antebellum, Bonnie Raitt, Sting, Seal.
